Wellbutrin XL – How long does it take to start working and what can I expect in the meantime?

Posted in wellbutrin xl on September 19th, 2011 by Sharon – 7 Comments

I started taking wellbutrin xl a little over two weeks ago. I started on 150mg and 4 days ago increased that dosage to 300mg. I felt better quickly after starting the medication and had 2 low days before I increased the dosage. The past two days I have been really depressed. Is this normal? Will it get better or should I talk to my doctor about another medication?

Also, I have had insomnia for 2 months – I guess a result of anxiety and depression. I have read that Wellbutrin XL can cause insomnia. Will that side effect go away? (I don’t know if it’s causing it in me since I had it before.)

Thanks!

Wait for another few days and take the 300mg. and if it persists see a doctor, Wellbutrin might not be the right antidepressant for you.
Some people will respond better to Paxil or Prozac or other drugs.
Sometimes the doctor might have to experiment with different pills and see what works best for you.

With All These Aids To Stop Smoking Why Do People Still Smoke?

Posted in wellbutrin bupropion on September 16th, 2011 by Sharon – 15 Comments

Smokers today have access to different types of stop smoking help: nicotine replacement therapies; drugs, such as Zyban; counseling; and self-help materials. Mark Twain is paraphrased as saying it best, “Stopping smoking is easy. I’ve done it a thousand times.” However, Mark Twain did not realize he was fighting a battle against nicotine, not stop smoking a cigarette. Today, we know to successfully stop smoking, this dependency on nicotine needs to be addressed first.

Psychological and emotional addictions are hard to break, especially while maintaining friendships with those who are still smoking. In cases like this, a useful help would be free telephone-counseling services, run by different states. Statistics show excellent results in this type of counseling, as smokers who counsel through the telephone services stop smoking twice as fast as those who do not.

Successful efforts to stop smoking are not about the smoker alone, but also about the encouragement and support shown to them by their family members, friends, co-workers, the stop smoking support team, and the counselors and medical teams. Many smokers say they would never have accomplished their goal to stop smoking, if not for this support. Smokers can get information about support groups from hospitals, local groups, health insurance companies, or even from their employers. However, the most useful help comes from skilled counselors, guiding the smokers in needed areas.

Individual or group counselors can help the smokers recognize nicotine withdrawal problems, or psychological and emotional issues that arise when they begin to stop smoking. It will not be easy, as nicotine is the strongest addiction there is. Once a smoker stops smoking, the nicotine is strong enough to stay present in the smoker’s body for about three to four days. After that, the nicotine withdrawal symptoms will take over, and last for about two days to several weeks.

The counselors and group support teams assist the smoker once this level is reached, or the smoker may return to the habit of smoking to relieve the withdrawal. Studies show that smokers who attend a specialist clinic are four times more likely to succeed in giving up smoking than those who rely on self-control alone. The latest statistics show that trying to quit on your own was the most popular strategy to stop smoking, yet seemed to be the least successful.

Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is a therapy to help a person quit smoking and relieving any withdrawal symptoms. Different types being used are skin patches, lozenges, nasal spray, inhaler, chewing gum, or tablets and pills – all providing small doses of nicotine to the system. These help smokers relieve withdrawal symptoms but work best if used with some form of behavior change program at the same time. If both forms of assistance are used, NRT can double a smoker’s chances of quitting smoking, as compared to those who use no therapy.

A drug that is gaining popularity is the non-nicotine pill, Zyban, also known as “bupropion hycrochloride.” It was the first non-nicotine prescription medication approved by the FDA in 1997, also sold as an antidepressant under the name of Wellbutrin. Smokers begin treatment one week before quitting smoking, then the treatment will continue for 7 to 12 weeks. All smokers can quit smoking if they want, because of health reasons or health reasons. How they quit will depend on the smoker, as there are many options available to help them to stop smoking.

What Are The Side Effects Of Quitting Smoking?

Posted in bupropion side effects on September 14th, 2011 by Sharon – 6 Comments

Another name for side effects of stopping smoking is withdrawal symptoms. And then there are side effects from the stop smoking aids depending on the individual and their addictions, which are used while trying to lesson the withdrawal symptoms. Fortunately, there are very few stop smoking side effects.

In fact, smokers who give up smoking become healthier while living longer as compared to those who fail to do so. They only have to battle a brief period when they give up smoking — the period when the withdrawal symptoms are most prominent, a time when they feel anxious, irritable, confused and depressed. They may also suffer from a slower heartbeat, increased appetite, and weight gain. However, all these can be controlled through proper counseling and exercises.

The reason for the withdrawal is the body demanding for its supply of nicotine. When going cold turkey, this period can range from 72 hours to two weeks of intenseness and pain, with the amount depending on the smoker and their addiction. The nicotine replacement therapy is especially useful in reducing the side effects as it feeds this hunger for nicotine.

The patient can use nicotine gum, nicotine inhaler, or nicotine patches to release small quantities of nicotine in the bloodstream to lesson the urge to smoke. Because the body is given this drug, it lowers depression and improves well being. They can also use alternative therapies like Tai Chi, Qi Gong, or Yoga to relieve stress and make life without cigarettes more bearable. Another possibility is the use of laser therapy that releases endorphins in the blood stream, making an individual feels better.

The 60% smokers who are most prone to side effects are those who suffer from depression, who usually are requiring extensive counseling and support from family members and friends. Many of them are put on Zyban, an FDA-approved drug that helps to reduce the urge to smoke and is also beneficial for treating depression among those who quit.

Known by the name Bupropion, it desensitizes the brain’s nicotine receptors, with seizures as its main side effects in less than one in 1,000. Other side effects, such as insomnia, dry mouth, and headaches are usually more common. Another side effect of quitting smoking is weight gown, usually putting on 5 to 8 pounds of weight, which should not be considered a dangerous side effect.

You should remember that smoking is much more injurious to health than gaining weight, which is controllable through exercise, dieting or Yoga. But you can’t undo the damage caused by smoking to your health. Your first priority therefore must be to give up smoking as you will feel better, healthier and more energetic in the long run.

Bipolar affective disorder is also referred to as manic-depression disorder, which is a form of a mental illness wherein the patient displays sudden and intense mood swings that are uncontrollable and can be dangerous for the individual as well as those around him/her. It can begin with the patient feeling happy, cause the person to feel utterly depressed the next moment and swing back to a cheerful mood within minutes; it can also stay for months in a mood cycling motion of manic-depressive or mixed episodes.

Timely diagnosis and clinical therapy is very important to educate patient and family besides any bigger support group around the individual about the condition, the ways in which it can manifest itself, the danger to the person and how best to control and treat it.

Best treatment options for bipolar affective disorder include regular therapy, combined with medication and teaching the patient more about the disorder and tools that are effective in controlling it, including reading a handbook on the subject and learning how to use a workbook on bipolar disorder.

Among the latest in the line of many new medications to treat bipolar affective disorder are Aripiprazole or Abilify, atypical anti-psychotic that has been approved for treatment of manic and mixed bipolar disorder episodes since 2004, which benefits the patient by shutting down the brain’s dopamine receptors so they behave more normally and thus, result in mood stabilization and the popular, Celexa. The latter is mainly an antidepressant that has been used by medical experts for a long time but witnessed more beneficial value over the last few years when treating patients with bipolar affective disorder.

Other effective and latest medication in the market for treating bipolar disorder includes Geodon, also an anti-psychotic that is a mood stabilizer with no fear of weight gain, working much like Zyprexa that has a few minor side effects of which weight gain is fortunately, not one; Wellbutrin, (may also be packaged as Zyban) are other helpful medication used initially as an anti-smoking drug but which has shown marked benefit for bipolar patients. To its advantage is the fact that patients using Wellbutrin can effectively manage weight as it neither induces weigh gain or loss!

Even though bipolar disorder cannot be cured completely, with timely diagnosis, proper counseling and the benefit of new-age medicines, much of the mental health of the patient can be improved as research is constantly being conducted to improve and upgrade the benefits of each drug proven effective in controlling bipolar affective disorder – so do consult a doctor and the psychiatrist before undertaking any sort of medication for bipolar disorder treatment.

Fda Approves Wellbutrin Xl(r) (bupropion Hcl Extended-release Tablets) for the Prevention of Seasonal Major Depressive Episodes

Posted in wellbutrin bupropion on September 7th, 2011 by Sharon – Be the first to comment

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Wellbutrin XL(R) for the prevention of seasonal major depressive episodes in patients with a diagnosis of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a condition affecting about 6 percent of American adults. Wellbutrin XL is the first and only medication approved to prevent seasonal major depressive episodes.

“Seasonal affective disorder is a serious and often under-diagnosed form of depression that affects millions of people each year in the United States,” said Norman E. Rosenthal, M.D., clinical professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown Medical School and medical director of Capital Clinical Research Associates. “The FDA approval of Wellbutrin XL for the prevention of seasonal major depressive episodes in adults diagnosed with SAD is exciting. For the first time, it may be possible to prevent the predictable onset of SAD with medication by beginning treatment in the autumn season, prior to experiencing depressive symptoms.”

A combined analysis of three clinical trials showed that wellbutrin xl reduces the chance of developing a seasonal major depressive episode by 44 percent.

Generic Wellbutrin Approved

Posted in wellbutrin depression on September 5th, 2011 by Sharon – 5 Comments

For the first time ever, the Food and Drug Administration has decided to approve the generic form of the blockbuster drug wellbutrin xl.

Wellbutrin is an extended release anti depressant used for major depression disorder. Research suggests that depression may be caused by an imbalance of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. Wellbutrin works by balancing the levels of the brains neurotransmitters called dopamine and norepinephrine.

Anchen Pharmaceuticals Incorporated out of Irvine California was granted the license to produce the generic medication. The brand version produced last year by GlaxoSmithKline was the 21 highest selling medication on the market in the United States, recording over 1.3 billion dollars in sales.

Although it received approval for generic reproduction, it did not come without a fight from Biovail, a biotech company partnered with GlaxoSmithKline. Biovail whose stock has fallen since the announcement of generic reproduction, sued the FDA to in an attempt to stop it from approving a generic version of the Wellbutrin. The company claimed the agency had looked over safety issues surrounding a generic version of the drug. An FDA statement Friday said Anchen Pharmaceutical’s application adequately addressed these issues.

According to Healthday, “Less-costly generic drugs are now used to fill more than 50 percent of all prescriptions, the FDA said. “Consumers and health professionals can be assured that an approved generic drug is bioequivalent to a brand-name drug and is its equal in dosage form, strength, and route of administration, quality, performance characteristics, and intended use,” the agency statement added.”

Is Wellbutrin Safe To Use?

Posted in generic for wellbutrin on September 3rd, 2011 by Sharon – 7 Comments

Wellbutrin, also known by its scientific name Bupropion, is a very popular antidepressant. It inhibits the reuptake of both dopamine and norepinephrine. If you have never used Wellbutrin before, you need to familiarize yourself with the drug interactions and the side effects associated with it.

Wellbutrin is metabolized by the liver. In lab experiments performed with rats, the drug was found to cause hepatocellular hypertrophy when administed in high doses (hypertrophy is an increase in the size of the cells). Common side effects include agitation, dizziness, hypertension, dry mouth, tremors, anxiety, loss of appetite, headache, excessive sweating, increased risk of seizure, and insomnia.

Although with the recommended dosing of the drug the probability that a seizure will occur is extremely small, patients using it should still be screened for any health factors that could contribute to or increase the likelihood of a seizure. A doctor may also review other prescriptions the patient might be taking and recommend an appropriate dosage based on that information.

Also, suicidal thoughts and attempts have been reported in children and adolescents. Bupropion has been shown to increase the incidence of suicidal thoughts amongst children and adolescents. When treating major depression in this group of patients, clinical benefits should be weighed carefully against the potential hazards. Usually, Bupropion is not intended for patients under the age of 18.

Another potential side effect is an improvement in sexual function. Bupropion, unlike serotonin reuptake inhibitors such as Prozac, does not appear to reduce the libido of the patient, and more frequently enhances sexual desire. Patients who complain of an impairment in their sex drive as a result of their SSRI have sometimes been prescribed small doses of Wellbutrin to correct it.

One controversy associated with Bupropion is its propensity to lower the seizure threshold. In combination with other medicines, it has been suspected to cause seizures in some patients who have never had a seizure before.[12] While this is not common, an increase in the number of such cases around the globe probably merits further discussion and investigation.

It is not uncommon for patients to receive treatment with other antidepressant prescriptions in combination with Wellbutrin. For this reason, a doctor should be careful when prescribing it with other medications prone to lowering the seizure threshold. Bupropion has also been known to produce seizures in combination with non-illegal drugs such as cocaine and recreational drugs such as alcohol.

I hope you have found this information helpful. Be sure to disclose to your physician any other drugs you might be taking before requesting a prescrtiption for Wellbutrin. Although some of the side effects and drug interactions we have covered are rare, they can happen unexpectedly to even the most healthy individuals.
